Pakistani Doctor, MPH Personal Statement Sample 1st Paragraph

I hope to be selected for your distinguished and competitive MPH Program in the USA for several reasons. First, I am an experienced medical doctor from Pakistan who is well versed in the area of public health issues and challenges in my country, one of the most critically important in the world in terms of public health crises and response. Furthermore, I have lived in South Africa since 2012 as a result of my husband’s employment and I have thus learned many valuable things about public health in South Africa, another important part of the world in terms of challenges in Public Health. For the past several years I have stayed busy as both a professional and a volunteer. I work in pathology laboratory primarily as a data analyst and as a volunteer I serve as a medical consultant for a local NPO that provides healthcare assistance to the underserved. Both of these experiences have inspired me to pursue my MPH Degree at XXXX University so as to become a Public Health professional with the highest level of preparation possible.

Sample Introduction: MPH Personal Purpose Statement, African Applicant

Since I am an African woman from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, along with my country women I have been discriminated against in nearly all facets of professional society, since it is generally thought that women should remain confined to the world of household chores, cooking, cleaning, and rearing children. Thus, to come as far as I have already has required enormous determination, grit, and confidence that I can indeed excel when given the opportunity.

Earning the MPH at XXXX will be my crowning achievement that will empower me to become a crusader in Nigeria for those who are the most vulnerable of all. Your program is the perfect option for me to prove my merit and form a foundation for doctoral studies so as to be able, in time, to move to the very top of public health leadership in Nigeria. I will also serve as an excellent, vocal, in fact militant, role model for young women who find themselves chained to the kitchen and the children against their will.

Sample Statement of Purpose for the Master's Program in Global Health, European University

XXXX University of Science and Technology's Master Program in Global Health is my first choice for graduate school for a variety of reasons. From America, I had a chance to visit XXXX earlier this year and was really inspired by its beauty and culture.  XXXX is one of the leading universities in Norway and, thus, I would like very much to combine my love of Norway with my passion for Public Health. I hope to be selected as a valuable contribution to the diversity of your program, since I was born in Panama and my focus is on the public health challenges of some of the most at-risk regions and peoples of Latin America, about which I have been reading intensively for many years. It would be a special honor for me to study under Dr. XXXX, the Director of XXXX's Thematic Strategic Area of Health, Welfare and Technology, since I am a devoted follower of his research on bacterial infections and antibiotics.

I have always been most inspired by the work of Dr. XXXX who was instrumental in the building of the Panama Canal by his design and implementation of measures to fight malaria. I have been especially concerned for some time about the plight of native communities and other low-income residents of Latin America with virtually no access to medical care and where disease spreads rapidly as a result of poor sanitation. I hope to earn my MS in Public Health in your program so as to be fully qualified for the rest of my professional lifetime to the struggle to contain if not eradicate disease in Latin America, particularly that which results from poor sanitation. I want to go there and teach vulnerable communities how to combat preventable disease, especially what is caused by mosquitoes. I pay very close attention to re-emerging diseases such as dengue fever and Leptospirosis in Latin America and I seek to better understanding why they have returned.

I am especially thankful as a young woman that I am fully bilingual and bicultural English/Spanish as this will be invaluable to the realization of my career aspirations as a Public Health Professional. I earned my BS in Business Administration with a focus on Finance in August of2008. If I had it to do over again I might have chosen an undergraduate major more closely related to public health issues and concerns; nevertheless, I feel strongly that an education in business has at least an indirect relevance for public health, especially in terms of human resources. I am convinced that I will excel in your MPH because nothing interests me as much as learning about and investigating disease processes, particularly insofar as they relate to developing countries. I have read a broad variety of books and articles about disease processes, especially as related to the developing world; and have a great passion for helping the least fortunate among us.

Since reading The Hot Zone at age 9, I have day-dreamed about a career in Public Health, working for the WHO or the CDC and doing research on the spread of diseases that impact the developing world. A devoted student of the history of disease and how it has impacted society, my main interest in Public Health organizations lies in the preventative measures that can be used in order to promote and protect the health of vulnerable populations. I look forward to a long professional lifetime working with local organizations to raise awareness of the need to adopt and implement preventative health care measures.

I thank you for considering my application to your Global Public Health Program at XXXX.

The Singular Joy of Public Health

I began drafting Personal Statements or Statements of Purpose 15 years ago, in all disciplines, nothing has brought us as much singular joy as we have found helping applicants with their essays for admission to graduate programs in public health. One applicant from Nigeria mentioned in her rough draft that in some rural areas of her country, parents set the feet and legs of their children on fire because they are convinced that this is the only way to ward off evil spirits.

Need I say more? It is the most profound honor imaginable for us to have the privilege of helping applicants in this field from all over the Developing World, public health professionals the vast majority of whom will return at some point in their career to help design and implement new generations of public health initiatives in their countries of origin in Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc.   We are two old wise men writing your statements, Robert and Steve, one in America and the other in Europe; and we are pleased to know that by helping you to join state-of-the-art programs in public health throughout the English-speaking world, we are insuring our own immortality in the most meaningful way possible, that our own labors will not have been in vain.

We draft dozens of Personal Statements of Purpose for graduate study each month and it is something that we have come to greatly enjoy and take very seriously. We have spent many years investigating what makes a statement for admission in the area of Public Health as effective as possible and we take delight in the eloquent expression of your special qualities, interests, and outstanding characteristics. Character is especially critical and we are experts at making you look exceptional--at least on paper. It is all in the wording and we have what we like to think is a natural gift for statement expression.
