At the center of my professional interests lies the plight of people with scarce resources
that need affordable housing, especially in my native Mexico. I want to dedicate my life to
sustainable development and building communities that are friendly to the environment,
healthy, both physically and psychologically. I see your program as the best match for my
interests and the ideal location where I will be able to dedicate myself completely to my
studies.
I feel that I am a strong applicant because I am creative and compassionate—but I have had
to struggle against enormous odds, as a Mexican, as a son, and as someone who has had
the enormous financial burden of helping his family instead of himself. Finally, however, I
am pleased to report that my little brothers and sisters are now mature enough to largely
manage family concerns. Free at last! I am now in a position to devote myself full time to
graduate school, especially if I were to be awarded some financial assistance.
I am on the borderline of what is acceptable for your program in terms of my GPA for the
same reasons. I needed to work a full time job in order to support my parents, my folks
entered the age at which they needed special treatment; especially my father who lives in
Mexico and suffers from polio disease. I thought that if I had nothing to do with girls then I
could handle a full time job and go to college full time and maintain a good GPA. But even
though I dated no one, it was still a great struggle because of the full time job. At least my
GPA in Architecture is much better than my overall.
My time spent working full time has mostly been at Specialties Design. I have also held
additional, part time jobs to help financially. But they have always been related in some way
to my desire to be a designer—within time, of living space for Mexico’s poor. Born in
California and partially raised there, I have also been raised in Baja California, Mexico. Thus,
for me, being Mexican-American is more equally divided than for many who are much
more American, or much more Mexican. I look forward to giving my all to your program
and contributing to the diversity of your institution
