I am writing to apply for admission to the Dentistry Program at XXXX University because becoming a dentist is my professional goal
in life and I love XXXX University, having done my undergraduate studies there in dental hygiene and having taught in the Dentistry
Program for several months. I am most fond of both the University and the program. Thus, it is my first and only choice, the only
dental school to which I am applying. I feel especially compatible with XXXX due to the great diversity of the student body. Being
Korean and immigrating to the United States from Argentina, I am highly representative of the vast diversity that characterizes Los
Angeles. And, as a native or near native speaker of three languages—English, Spanish, and Korean—, I look forward to a long
professional life characterized by service to a diverse clientele that includes patients from all three primary language groups.
As a child I always told people that I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. And as a deeply spiritual person, I see becoming a health
care provider as something more than a way to make money or support my family; for me, it is also a way to serve my community.
My long term goal is to some day be able to establish my own dental practice and to provide free or radically discounted service to
low income individuals in addition to those with insurance plans or other means to pay for my service.
My first love as a child was fixing computers, spending hours on end laboring inside tiny spaces, working with great care and
handling very delicate parts. I have also long been fascinated with the life sciences, especially human biology, and by the time that I
graduated from high school, I was certain that I wanted to be a dentist. Yet, as a child of immigrant parents unfamiliar with the
language, the culture, etc., life has been challenging for me. I am especially thankful for the beautiful wife and baby that I now have
whose presence in my life causes me to be especially highly motivated to succeed, and has also made me a more compassionate
person.
I spent nearly 5 years in junior college maturing, developing, and building my self confidence to the point where I could make my
dream of becoming a dentist a reality. The big breakthrough for me came the day that I saw a flyer at my junior college about a
seminar for the dental hygiene program at XXXX. I attended the seminar, decided to apply, and was accepted. The high point of my
professional life so far has been the opportunity to teach in the XXXX Dentistry Program from the month of my graduation, in May
of 2004, until that following August. For just over three months, I had the privilege of teaching first-year dental students the
processes of periodontal disease and periodontal instrumentation implementation. I also helped to evaluate students and to guide
periodontal work and soft tissue management for third and fourth year dental students.

I have spent the last 2.5 years working almost full time for a large dental practice where we have virtually all dental specialties under
one roof. And I have also worked part time for other dentists. I am a very hard worker, someone who likes working many hours,
and I have learned a great deal about what goes on in the practice of dentistry. I have developed great respect for some dentists and
I work to imitate their strongest characteristics; at the same time, I have also labored to avoid making the mistakes that I have noted
some doctors making. In other words, I have struggled to become a very critical observer, taking notes in my mind that I am certain
will serve me well in dentistry school and working as a practicing dentist.
I feel strongly that the combination of my education and my work experience makes me an excellent candidate for XXXX. I have
learned the critical importance of working as a team player and building a good rapport with one’s colleagues. I labor to develop
leadership skills through the development of a humble, diplomatic, yet creative attitude, always staying positive, energetic, and highly
professional. At the same time, I treat all who cross my path in a warm and friendly way. I think that leadership is about caring,
listening, and having a genuine interest in people. Becoming a dentist will allow me to realize my central dream in life of service to
