I also had the pleasure of teaching Business English, which I had never done before. Business has now become one of my areas of expertise. I shall

This is Shin Heung College in Uijonbu on the northern edge of Seoul, where
I taught Tourism and Business English in 1997 and 1998 in a special
program sponsored and financed by the government to retrain people who
were victims of corporate downsizing/restructuring. I had hundreds of
students and we had a lot of fun together. I also had the privilege of
teaching TOEIC classes in a special summer program at Seoul National
University of Technology (formerly Seoul Polytechnic). Getting good
scores on the TOEIC was so important to my students that I felt like I
was doing something especially worthwhile.

My own professional training is in ethics, religion, and history, the Cold War; and in Korea the Cold War is still with us. Korea fascinates me
enormously, which is why I chose to go there to teach English in 1997, so as to get to know the Korean people and their country better, to have a closer
look. I was especially impressed by the experience of watching the Korean people in Dong-Du-Chon survive the worst flooding in decades in 1998.
Many were crying as they stood in the mud and threw out their furniture. Many were also laughing, which I thought was a wonderful lesson in how to
deal with tragedy. We must laugh to live. I drank a fair share of rice wine.
