I can make no claim to be an expert in
things Japanese. One reason for this
may be that I am a historian of the Cold
War and Japan was very fortunate to
have had a very low profile in that
longstanding conflict. Nevertheless, I am
exceedingly grateful that I was able to
visit the charming city of Fukuoka in July
of 1998. At the holy site of Shofukuji
where Buddhism first entered Japan; I
had the opportunity to walk on holy
ground. Never before have I felt the level
of tranquility and peace that I did when I
visited and reflected on life at this most

My visit to Shofukuji was especially important to me. I had an awesome sensation that I was soaking
up spiritual energy. Never before had I set foot in a place with such incredible spiritual energy; one
could truly feel it. I hope to return some day.
Below, to be an observer at the height of the Hakata Yamakasa festival in Fukuoka, walking alone, is
a great privilege for a foreign visitor. One gets the impression that one is learning at a at an
unprecedented rate of sensory induction. I look forward to another visit to Shofukuji before I die.
I saw the Hakata Yamakasa festival as a gift from God. I went there by coincidence, to
renew a work visa for South Korea where I was teaching. As a historian of the politics of
gender roles, the sight of many tens of thousands of males, from 1 to 100 years old,
dressed in the traditional attire of warriors, running through the streets screaming
"OSAI, OSAI," was simply incredible. Never have I seen such a dynamic city. I learned
that it is here in Fukuoka where the Mongol invaders were repelled by the Kamakazi
winds in the 13th century; the spirits are all around you, especially during Yamakasa. I
became acquainted with a Japanese people that are at once serene, like Shofukuji, and
full of powerful wind forces that give them unparalled levels of productive and creative
energy. I admire the Japanese, and would feel deeply honored to have more Japanese
clients so as to become more familiar with Japanese perspectives and issues.
