If your limit is in pages rather than number of words, the font can sometimes be reduced to 11 rather than 12 unless the directions specify 12. In a similar way, in some
cases, the spacing can be reduced if necessary to 1.5 rather than double, again, unless specified otherwise (at no extra charge). We will let you know if we think this is

Ethnicity can be especially relevant and sometimes
fundamental to both the application process and the
direction of research interest. And this is true in many
areas or disciplines. Especially if you are a person of
color, generally speaking, I can provide a special bang in
your essay that is rather impressive, a sound investment
in your future. While people of color are often my
favorite clients, I think that it can also be effective for
Caucasians--at least in some areas such as Social
Work--to account in some way for their ethnic makeup
and its relevance to their professional identity.
Sometimes, it can be assumed; "born and raised in
Kansas" is fine. But a Personal Statement is precisely
that, 'personal'. Sometimes, ethnicity can be a decisive
factor. A young woman born in Poland, for example,
who had visited India extensively and speaks fluent
Hindi at the age of 23, if I had not asked her about her
ethnicity, I would not have known that she was not
Indian: she learned Hindi on her own as a special
interest, as a child and adolescent, by her own initiative,
something that is enormously powerful.
