Our Philosophy
|
It is a great pleasure to meet you! My name is Roberto and I am the
founder of EnglishVoiceChat.com and SpanishVoiceChat.com. This
endeavor grows our of my work as a North American historian of Central
America and my some 20 years plus struggling to perfect my Spanish
and watching many of my Latino friends struggling with English. It also
comes from my experience as an ESL teacher in Central America as well
as the United States. At the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana,
where I studied Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language the
computer stood at the center of teaching technique as well as technology.

Teaching and learning online takes place through the use of tools and much of its
success is a result of the availability and quality of the tools and support technology that
are available. Online teaching has come about as a result of these tools; and now, voice
connections have become available to the extent to which there is much greater potential
than before for teaching language arts online. While this would have been possible
before, it would have required the expense of long distance telephone charges, which on
an international level would have made this form of communication outside of the budget
of many if not most who would be otherwise interested in online communication with
voice. Now, taking advantage of free PC to PC telephone connections anywhere in the
world, there is much greater opportunity for intercultural contact in teaching and learning—
all in the comfort and convenience of your own home—or a cyber café. Where we spend
much of our time in Central America, there are cyber services in every other block, and
headphones are becoming increasingly common. And many of these young people have
the capacity to be online language teachers--some, of course, better than others.
All of this is especially true concerning the teaching and learning of Communication and
Pronunciation. Pronunciation is the central key, since, while you receive instruction in your
target language in the chat box, and you are reading the printed words, you also here
those words being spoken at the same time that you are reading them and you hear the
words being spoken by a native or near-native speaker of the target language—seeing
and hearing simultaneously—greatly reinforcing the learning process. When you both
hear and see the words at the same time, your recall is much better, for both reading and
listening. EnglishVoiceChat.com and SpanishVoiceChat.com are proud, therefore, to be
responding to the advent of free Internet voice service and to be facilitating new modes of
teaching and learning that serve to link students and teachers together from around the
world. Thus, the teacher comes into your living room (or office or bedroom, etc), at an hour
that is handy for you, and the Chat box is your interactive ‘blackboard’. The voice guides
you to understand and to learn how to speak in the target language at the same time that
you learn how to read. Of course, this method works better for those who already possess
some basic skills in Spanish and want to improve. This method is not meant to replace
learning how to read in a target language, this will always be critical to language learning.
Rather, this method is meant to be complimentary. And the better you are able to read—
and write—the target language, the better this method will be at helping you to improve.
Chat rooms have been around for a long time now and there are many of them that are
available and suggested especially for those who want to learn English or Spanish. It is
thought that English speakers can teach English to Spanish speakers at the same time
that Spanish speakers can teach Spanish to English speakers, and some learning does
take place in these casual, non-professional, bilingual chat rooms. Yet, it is also seems
clear that if one’s goal is to learn intensively, than that should be the sole focus of the
session, which requires that the teacher be professional and the roles clearly defined as
to who is the teacher and who is the learner. This is especially important because the
learner pays the teacher to teach, thus the learner must be the center of attention and all
of the communication that takes place should be directed towards the student learning
the target language. EnglishVoiceChat.com and SpanishVoiceChat.com are proud to be
able to provide you with the email addresses of those who are looking for casual chat
with voice partners that do not charge; we also provide you with the email addresses of
those who wish to teach you professionally for a fee which is worked out between student
and teacher. We charge the modest fee of $9.95 for the contact information for the teacher
of your choice, including their email address and messenger identities. After making your
purchase, please allow us up to 24 hours to respond with the contact information.
