Diversity Personal Statements
The vast majority of Americans want or would like to see a minority presence in higher education that is at least more or less
proportionate to the presence of that particular group of people in the general population. How to get there is the controversial
part. For our purposes here, however, we need only to recognize that being a member of (or one's relation to) minority groups
does matter when one applies to graduate school, and this needs to be taken into account when writing one’s SOP. This is
especially important in terms of scholarships and financial aid. If a university wants a morally acceptable level of diversity on its
campus, it needs to find the funds to implement its policies, and universities use much of their economic resources to attract
minority students. Thus, accounting for diversity in your statement is of key, critical importance. This issue is so important that
many programs (especially law school) require a separete diversity statement, such as the sample shown above.

I want to attend XXXX Law School because I think it is the finest program in the country and I admire the diversity of its faculty and student body. My undergraduate minor in
the Legal Environment of Business has inspired me to want to become a corporate attorney in the areas of corporate law, and intellectual property rights. My studies have helped
me to acquire an accomplished understanding of many of the central aspects of law that pertain to the business world and I would like to further my study in this area at the same
time that I meet all requirements for the JD Degree.
Upon completion of law school I want to practice as a corporate attorney primarily in DC. But I would also love to practice law in West Africa, in my native land. I am also
tantalized by the idea of some day also practicing law in Spanish, since I adore Latin American and Caribbean culture, food, everything. I take pride in the fact that I am African,
and African American, a woman who has embraced Latin language and culture, its color.
Diversity Statement for Law School
I see my very strong work ethic as my greatest asset and I have persevered through my hardships. I am an
exceptional student in and outside of the classroom, the first in my family to pursue a second degree, and any degree
in the legal field. My parents emigrated from Nigeria and I am the first born in America. I have exceptional analytical
and concise writing skills that I have gained primarily from working towards the psychology degree that I will earn in
December. 10 years from now I would like to be a successful corporate attorney, make an impact on the world,
serve as a role-model for those who will come behind me. I speak English but I am also proficient in reading and
writing Spanish as well as speaking it. I also speak and understand Yoruba, the dominant Nigerian language. I am not
just an African woman, therefore, I am also an African-American woman, because I was born and raised in Maryland.
