After completing my doctoral degree at the University of
Southern California, I attended the University of Illinois for
one year, where I taught ESL and studied in the
Department of English as an International Language. My
best friend in this program was Lo Hsiao-Wen, pictured at
right in downtown Chicago. I spent a great deal of time
with her in Illinois and I learned very much about what it
means to be Taiwanese as well as Chinese; in other words,
what it means to be both. Hsiao-Wen is first Taiwanese
then Chinese. I am fascinated by this dual identity. I am
also intrigued with the way that this dual identity plays
itself out in Taiwanese politics.

I have long been involved with and have enjoyed
important bonds with Chinese and Taiwanese culture.
Many of my most important clients have been Taiwanese
and several have been from mainland China. One of my
closest personal friends has lived in Taiwan for many

visit him at some point in the future. I am especially
mesmerized by things Chinese and have a deep and
